Isoflavones are plant-derived compounds that have estrogen-like properties, and are found uniquely rich in soy foods. It would make sense that estrogen-like properties could cause some concern, but good new boys! Soy is not responsible for gynocamascia (aka man boobs).
In fact, these phytoestrogens found in soy have positive health benefits just for men! A diet high in soy intake is associated with about a 30% reduction in prostate cancer risk. Preliminary data suggest that the isoflavones may help to alleviate side effects in men undergoing radiation for treatment of prostate cancer. To further ease your concern, isoflavones have no effect on testosterone or estrogen levels in men.
Additional benefits of soy include reducing the risk of heart disease, enhanced endothelial function (aka blood vessels) and reduced arterial stiffness. Studies are also showing positive effects on bone health.
Gentleman, eat your soy worry free. Not just worry free but with joy and pride knowing you are providing positive health benefits to your body.
Though soy foods have no effect on thyroid function in people with normal thyroids, those who are on medications for low thyroid function should not consume soy foods 1 to 3 hours after taking thyroid medication. Contact your medical provider if you are on thyroid lowering medication and consuming or interested in consuming soy foods.
